The region of South West England is made up of the counties of Bristol, Dorset, Cornwall, Somerset, Devon, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire, as well as the Isles of Scilly. Main industries and employers operating in South West England
Bristol, the M4 corridor and south-east Dorset are the most economically productive areas within the region and have the best links with the capital. Bristol produces a quarter of the area’s economic productivity, and its surrounding areas of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire make up another quarter.
Aeronautics forms the basis of Bristol’s economy, with companies such as Rolls-Royce (military division), Airbus UK plus BAE Systems locating their factories in Filton. In recent years telecommunications, defence, IT and electronics have become prominent industries in Swindon, Bristol and elsewhere. The service industry is also a major employer in the region, along with tourism.
The region has a varied income distribution between the east and the west. Bristol is the second most affluent major city in England after London, in contrast to parts of Cornwall which have some of North Europe’s lowest average incomes.
