While employment in the West Midlands has traditionally been centred around manufacturing, with major brands such as Rover, Jaguar, Wedgwood, JCB and Cadbury setting up in the region, that share of the employment sector has fallen to around 10 per cent of the workforce, still one of the highest percentages in the UK.
Some of the region’s largest employers are the National Health Service and the public sector in general, car maker Jaguar, Birmingham-based coach company National Express, and Mondelez International, the new parent company of Cadbury. Global engineering businesses JCB Service and GKN Plc are also based in this region, in Staffordshire and Worcestershire respectively.
